In an unusual turn of events, 12 school students from the same secondary school were found to be pregnant at the same time by the Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association(PKBI).
The students, who attended a secondary school in Lampung, Sumatera were found to be grades seven, eight and nine, which means they are from 12 to 15 years of age. They were found to be pregnant after the PKBI conducted a screening at the school.
As reported by Bankapos, the director of PHBI, Dwi Hafsah Handayani said that initially, the school tried to keep the pregnancies under wraps and hide it from them. They informed the Association that the students had not been up to mischief.
After tests had been conducted, it was found that 12 of the students were indeed expecting a baby. Surveys conducted by PKBI around the area showed that more than a 100 condoms had been sold, which shows that many of them knew the importance of contraception.
Dwi Hafsah Handayani said that this was indeed a worrying situation and urged schools to be more aggressive in disciplining their students. She added that parents also had a role to play, and should ensure that their kids are kept away from immoral activities.
