Two high school students in Telangana, India, burnt themselves to death in a suicide pact. The two students, K Mahinder and Ravi Teja, who were both 16 years old, had been depressed after they realised that they were both in love with the same girl.
According to Gulf News, the incident, which happened on Sunday (30/09/18) occurred when the students met up to drink and talk late into the night, but after the subject of the girl was brought up, the students decided to pour petrol all over each other and set themselves alight.
Jagatiyal deputy superintendent of police Venkat Ramanna told journalists on Monday that the two classmates were inspired by a recent Telugu movie, RX100.
“The two had watched the film together and inspired by it decided to end their lives as they realised that their love was destined to fail. Sunday being a holiday, they went around together and had a drink at an isolated spot late in the evening. Later they poured the petrol they had brought with them on each other and set themselves on fire”, said the deputy superintendent.
Initially, the police had suspected that they had killed each other because of an altercation, but subsequent investigations revealed that it was a suicide pact.
“The families of the two boys failed to notice the mental condition and suicidal tendencies of the boys,” said the deputy superintendent.
He also urged that parents keep an eye on their children and if they notice any unusual changes, they should immediately take them to see a counsellor.
